Our KCU journey is shared through stories. The KCU name, logo and the goanna all tell a story about our journey.
OUR NAME
The name KCU describes the three companies Kurtarra Pty Ltd, Cape Crushing and Earthmoving Pty Ltd and Underground Services Australia Pty Ltd came together to discuss how they could support the mining industry and the wider community in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
With all three companies being involved in mining in different forms, it was agreed that each would “focus on what they did best” strengthening the joint venture. Cape went on to purchase Underground Services Australia Pty Ltd and later join with Dunstan the joint venture became two parties. The “U” remained in KCU to represent the company’s importance in forming the joint venture.
The company and its leadership team is committed to Indigenous engagement. KCU is a Supply Nation registered Western Australian Indigenous Partnered Business.
Working with Traditional Owner groups, KCU provides employment opportunities through training and development, procurement and subcontracting.

Story of how the logo came about.
Cape Dunstan provides the operational capability, construction expertise, project management systems, specialised plant & equipment and financial security to KCU.
KCU operates under Cape Dunstan’s Integrated Management System (IMS) complying with ISO 45001. On a Federal level, KCU operates under Cape Dunstan’s OFSC safety accreditation.
KCU main operations are operated on Palyku country. Our operations now have expanded to include the Pilbara and Kimberley regions of WA.
Did you know? The name Kurtarra is a Palyku word that means brothers. Representing the four brothers of the Jaffrey-Sam family who formed Kurtarra.
KCU is an accredited Supply Nation business that proudly services both the remote and regional communities of Western Australia. We are committed to Indigenous engagement. In the Dream time all the goanna’s started painting each other by doing dot paintings.
